Join us Sunday, November 11th, when a man who has made revolutionary contributions to the understanding and treatment of trauma, Dr. Peter Levine, will join me to explore the theme of trauma, as we discuss “Creating Health In a Traumatized Society.”
When the nervous system is overwhelmed, a dysfunctional neurological pattern is set in motion. And that pattern tends to recreate itself and persist, even when it has outlived its usefulness. When we are in a state of traumatic activation, we lose our ability to respond freely and flexibly in present time; instead, we react. Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we act in ways that overwhelm and thus trigger trauma in others.
And so trauma begets trauma, and becomes pervasive, shaping our nervous systems and our entire society. How can these patterns be released?
Peter Levine observed how animals in the wild remain flexible even after many near-death encounters. Their bodies literally shake off the trauma they experience after encounters with predators. His insights from these studies catalyzed a whole new approach to releasing trauma. Rather than crude catharsis, he revealed refined, organic ways to support the body and nervous system to naturally release trauma. This became Somatic Experiencing, an innovative psychotherapeutic school that has trained thousands of therapists during the last twenty years.
In this dialog, Peter will talk with me about the profound relationship between trauma and spirituality. The survival energy circuits involved in trauma, and emergence from trauma, are the same pathways that are trained in many forms of spiritual practice. We will explore how our work to heal from trauma can help create a more responsive, conscious human society.
About Peter Levine
