“Scenius” is a word coined by musician Brian Eno to describe “the intelligence and the intuition of a whole cultural scene. It is the communal form of the concept of the genius.”
Research is teaching us that the most important creative new ideas come not from remarkable individuals but from the interactions of highly creative and collaborative communities.
The history of art and science is all about episodes of scenius: America’s founding fathers; Paris in the 20s; the Algonquin Round Table, the SF Beats, the ever-expanding Silicon Valley, Building 20 at MIT, etc. etc.
We keep encountering fresh evidence that, in the famous phrase, “we are smarter than me.” Meanwhile, many of us are discovering that “my” creativity is an expression of something larger, the inherent creativity of the Kosmos itself. We’re realizing that we don’t have to “try” to be creative, but that, when we get out of the way, we already are creative. In fact, we’re an expression of creativity itself!
And this is part of the “good news” that balances the “terrible news” we confront ever day.
Have you noticed that you’re (at least sometimes) participating in the “scenius” of a budding Integral and Evolutionary and trans-rationally spiritual and holistic convergence, a genius scene with no single address?
Is it a movement? A zeitgeist? A meta-meme? An operating system? An academic theory? The call of the evolving Kosmos?.
Two of Terry Patten’s co-creative partners in Integral Scenius, Jeff Salzman and Diane Hamilton, will be joining him to explore this phenomenon and to explore this question and to ask if this principle may be a key to unlocking our shared capacity to rise to the challenges of our very “interesting time.”
Diane Musho Hamilton is a fully ordained Zen priest and teacher. She has studied Buddhism since 1984, and was given dharma transmission by her Zen master, Genpo Roshi, in 2006. She works with the Big Mind process; a facilitation technique synthesized by Roshi to convey Eastern teachings to Western audiences.
Diane is well known as an innovator in facilitating group dialogues, especially conversations about culture, religion, race and gender relations. She was the first Director of the Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution for the Utah Judiciary, where she established the original mediation programs in the state court system. She lives in Salt Lake City with her husband, Michael D. Zimmerman, a lawyer and Zen teacher.
Jeff Salzman worked for three years with Ken Wilber in developing the Integral Institute, specifically seminars on integral applications to business, psychology and spirituality. He currently teaches at Boulder Integral, and leads its flagship offering: The Integral Incubator, a five-day, in-residence program designed to help people get traction on the calling of their lives.
Jeff co-founded CareerTrack Training, an adult education company he and his partner built into an international organization producing 3000+ seminars annually, and employing 300+ people. He is a long-time practitioner in several philosophical and spiritual traditions, Jeff has taught Buddhist meditation and led many retreats.
