Regular listeners to Beyond Awakening may know that Terry Patten’s root teacher was the brilliant and controversial Adi Da Samraj (1939-2008.) The day he died, Adi Da completed a book, Not-Two IS Peace: The Ordinary People’s Way of Global Cooperative Order, which addresses the theme of this series — a spiritual basis for an effective human response to the crisis of our times.
In it, Adi Da declares that from a conventional perspective, our world problems are truly insoluble. And the disasters and suffering that seem bound to befall us will force people to rediscover some key principles:
– “Prior Unity” by which he points to the unity that exists inherently, “a priori”, before all the apparent differences and conflicts in the world.
– “Everybody-all-at-once” indicating the force of the human collective, which is not a bunch of separate individuals, but an expression of the prior unity of the entire human family.
– The inherently “self-organizing, self-correcting, and self-rightening” nature of all natural processes, including the universe and humankind.
In our next broadcast, Terry will be joined by Frank Marrero, a longtime devotee, dynamic storyteller, brilliant scholar of ancient Greek philosophy, and innovator in affective childhood education. They will discuss Adi Da’s spiritual clarity and transmission, and the unique light it shines on our world crisis. (By the way, Terry will do this without shying away from the questions and controversies about Adi Da.)
“Only everybody-all-at-once can change the current chaos.” – Adi Da Samraj
Frank Marrero is an illumined mystic, an infectious storyteller in the “good old” Tennessee tradition, and a 5th grade public school teacher in the San Francisco Bay area. He wrote an innovative integral affective educational curriculum (including character education, emotional fluency, moral values, and self-awareness) called Big Philosophy for Little Kids. He is also a scholar of ancient Greece and the author of Recollections of Socrates and The View from Delphi: An Ecstatic Appreciation of Western History.
These original writings have been endorsed and highly praised by Norman O. Brown, Michael Murphy, Richard Tarnas, and the director of the Joseph Campbell Foundation, as well as hundreds of grateful teachers and students.
Frank lived for over a decade as a renunciate in the ashram of Adi Da Samraj where he studied not just Adi Da’s enormous body of teachings but also many spiritual traditions, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism. He was also exposed to potent spiritual transmission, akin the initiations of the ancient Mysteries and shaktipat-dirksha. Frank was the first Director of Children’s Education in Adi Da’s ashram, and is the proud father of two bright and happy children: 16 year-old Salem and 12 year-old Ella.
