Join Us this Sunday, November 21st for “A New Order of Spirituality In Our Time” with Dr. Jean Houston

Join us this Sunday for an inspiring dialogue at the leading edge with Dr. Jean Houston.

The mystical path is predicated on awakening. The authentic mystic must switch off our conventional robotic auto-pilot and abandon lackluster passivity. Only then can she or he engage co-creation with vigor, attention, focus, and radiance. Thus the mystical experience is perhaps the greatest of all accelerators of evolutionary enhancement. Through it, we tap into wider physical, mental, and emotional systems, thereby gaining entrance into the next stage of our unfolding, both individually and collectively. Once the province of the few, the mystical path may now be the requirement of the many—and a unique developmental path for self and world.

    Jean Houston and Mysticism

Jean beautifully summarized the work of Evelyn Underhill on the aspects of the mystical experience.
    1. Awakening – This is what I have always been?
    2. Purification – Let me try to make my body, mind, life, and World more beautiful, good, and true.
    3. Illumination – I can see the patterns of reality. Ken Wilber is superb here.
    4. Vision and voices – What does God’s voice have to tell me?
    5. Voidness – True peace at last.
    6. Ecstasy – May I be humble and grateful.
    7. Dark Night – May I use this be more compassionate towards all beings.
    8. Union – Home. How gorgeous and built of Love! May I share it’s essence with all beings.

She and Terry talked at length how we have the responsibility and hopefully desire to use our mystical gifts to serve the World. We seem to be at a place in time where our choice might be to evolve, come together, and serve the World in a meaningful and needed way or see it all broken in our lifetime due to our inaction. Ouch. May it not come to this. As I listened to this talk I had the vision of us breaking this beautiful World of Life like a child breaking her favorite toy in ignorance. It was a horrible vision. May it not come to this. Please Lord. May it not come to this.

It is always such a joy to listen to Jean’s voice. She is so full of life.

I hope that Jean may discuss something about Martin Prechtel who I consider one of the great spiritual guides of this or any age. Once he has passed, there will probably never be another who can connect us to our indigenous connections as powerfully as he has been able to do so

  3. John Munter says

I think small spiritual groups can change the global conversation in this age through lila–divine play.

In my view and experience the Gospel of Thomas has something to add. L 49 begins the last two-saying cycle in Thomas and functions as a hidden summary or title of Thomas:

“Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the alone and chosen, for you will find the Kingdom. For you are from it, and to it you will return'”

This saying is sandwiched by two amazing ones referencing being outside the time stream. L 48 is one of the two ‘move, mountain’ sayings. L 50 is the most overtly informative in Thomas with as a traditional ‘ascent’ story. Distinctly from others from ancient Egypt or among the Hebrews, when you are accosted by gatekeepers or interrogators you dont need a secret password to get through. All you need is the remembrance that you came from the light. As L 49 says as an intro: about the light “you are from it and to it you will return”.

So, now the big question is–what does this summary exactly mean? For that we have to go to the second saying in Cycle 49 which is L 98 and an unknown parable which I regard as the hidden essence of Thomas:

“Jesus said, ‘The Kingdom of the Father is like a certain man who wanted to kill a powerful man. In his own house he drew his sword and stuck it into the wall in order to find out whether his hand could carry through. Then he slew the powerful man.'”

Commentators argue for the authenticity of this parable but dont seem to understand it. Of course it is about preparation. The sword represents practicing with the sword of the spirit in your own consciousness until your confidence in it becomes strong enough to vanquish your ego and sense of separateness, the strong man.

Confirmation of this comes from L 97 of which L 98 is explanatory which is another unknown parable talking about a cracked jar which cant handle all the ‘meal’ or spiritual content of the soul.

Many individuals are letting this meal pour through in individual ways like ‘Swami Beyondananda’-Steve Baerman focusing on laughter and networking others. Bill McKibbon for decades has written, organized people globally, and created events.

With the creation of the internet there are new opportunities for funny and informative videos to go viral in the street theatre and divine fool tradition. I still remember an old movie from the seventies about Murshid Sam Lewis who was busy discoursing on spirituality while fixing dinner. We watched him peel the potatoes and carrots in separate piles, then he would put them each in the stew, and at the end just threw all the peelings in too as if it wasnt anything usual.

But, I am actually thinking more of saturday night live skits that skewer our various ‘strong mans’ with goofiness from beginning to end that allows the ‘pill’ of intelligent conversation to go down the gullet. They probably shouldn’t be too unkind and should end optimistically.

some of you would be kinder than me..sorry…but here is an idea:

….the scene opens with kids arguing in the white house with Pres Obusha (names have been changed to protect the guilty) and his council of economic advisors about putting up jimmy carters solar panel. The kids get nowhere until Obushas kids come in from digging up the garden and accost a guard…”hey…whats that?…a tarp…whats under the tarp….a crate…whats in the crate?…a box…whats in the box?…its a state secret” The older kids say “its our solar panel….cool….please daddy put it up”….then obusha says OK and to an aide quietly…”put it where the sun dont shine”. Unfortunately the fake news channel is tipped off by “Uncle” Rahm emmanuel who was at the white house fundraising who thinks the presidency is his real ‘dream job’

The resulting scandal tanks the US and world economy allowing Sarah Palin to win the next election–and reducing global emissions—oops!. Everything goes smoothly until the West Antarctic ice sheet begins calving off and slowly rising sea levels. The US copes pretty well. All the oldsters in Fl just move back to their relatives in Minnesota. DC being under water was only a tourist problem. The new capitol in Denver was closer to Alaska anyway.

But the real problem came when the 20 million bangladeshis who were being flooded out couldnt get past the wall India had built for just such a contingency so they began floating on anything they could find down the Brahmaputra river into China. Fortunately for china they had just bought up all the oil companies at a bargan basement rate during the 2nd great depression and so demanded that sarah take a tanker full of bangladeshis for every tanker of oil we get–which she was only too happy to do since the great wall she had built to keep the mexicans out had only empowered the farm workers union. This would be a chance at cheap labor to break the union, so she shipped them all to California–who promptly bought each a one-way ticket to the ‘lands of opportunity’ in jackson hole or somewhere in Texas.

The farm workers fought back teaching all the new immigrants English, getting them citizenship, and signed up to vote, they started to win elections based on a chicken fajita in every solar oven. Bill gates gave everybody a computer and we started to live like the japanese and chinese do but nobody cared becasue virtual reality and computer gaming had improved so much they were ‘better than sex’….the end.

(and this is why the black hills were given back to the Indians under their treaty of 1867 where soon was carved a figure of jesse jackson giving the peace sign to crazy horse.)

I didnt put any yogis or zen masters in but that could be even funnier to us at least. Even if this shtick doesn’t have its intended effect on others, we may find the levity useful for our spiritual balance.
